Short description

Set in the world of King Arthur, Quest for Camelot follows Kayley, a young woman who has grown up on stories of her father's service as a Knight of the Round Table and hopes to take up that calling herself. Her ambitions gain urgency when the renegade Ruber seizes the sword Excalibur and threatens Camelot. To recover the sword and protect the kingdom, Kayley sets out on a journey joined by Garrett, a blind hermit, and a two-headed dragon whose heads bicker endlessly with each other.

The film was directed by Frederik Du Chau, the first of the four features listed for him in release order, and written by Kirk DeMicco, David Seidler and Jacqueline Feather, with Dalisa Cohen producing. It is a Warner Bros. Animation production with a voice cast led by Jessalyn Gilsig and, for the songs, Andrea Corr as Kayley; Cary Elwes and Bryan White share Garrett, while Gary Oldman voices Ruber and Eric Idle voices Devon. Twenty-one cast members and 127 crew are credited.

Released in May 1998, the film runs 86 minutes and mixes animation with drama, family, fantasy and romance. Its reported budget of 40 million dollars was not matched by its worldwide gross of about 23 million. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 20,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 872 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 28 reviews places it below the audience scores on both sites.

What's left behind the scenes

  • It was originally intended to be a Bill C.hoyer film—darker and more aligned with the overall mood of Vera Chapman's (1898-1996) novel, which served as the basis for the script. However, this idea was abandoned in favor of a lighter screenplay with traits typical of 1990s animation: plenty of music, a strong female lead, a power-hungry antagonist, a romantic plotline, talking animals, and family-friendly jokes.
