The Mummy

A British archaeological expedition in Egypt opens the tomb of Princess Ananka, an ancient priestess, despite a local warning that desecrating Egyptian graves brings death. Among the finds is a scroll whose words can restore the dead to life. When one of the explorers reads it aloud, Kharis, the mummy who guarded Ananka in life and was buried with her, rises again. Bound to punish those who disturbed the tomb, he sets out after the members of the expedition, who have returned home to England, where a police inspector is at first unwilling to accept that an ancient curse and a walking mummy could be behind the deaths. Kharis's purpose is complicated by Isobel, the wife of one of the archaeologists, who resembles the princess he once served.

Terence Fisher directed the film, the sixth of the sixteen features credited to him in chronological order, following The Hound of the Baskervilles and preceding The Brides of Dracula. Jimmy Sangster wrote the screenplay and Michael Carreras produced for Hammer Film Productions. Peter Cushing plays John Banning, Christopher Lee is Kharis, and Yvonne Furneaux appears as Isobel and as Princess Ananka, with Eddie Byrne, Felix Aylmer and Raymond Huntley in supporting roles.

The film runs 88 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 11 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 6.7 out of 10 from 274 votes, a gap that suggests reviewers responded to it more warmly than the general viewing public did.
