Penny Appleby, a young woman who uses a wheelchair, arrives at her father's house on the French Riviera, the first time she has seen him in ten years. Instead of her father, she is met by Jane, his new wife, who explains that he has been called away on a sudden business trip. Penny finds the explanation hard to accept, and her unease grows when she glimpses what appears to be her father's body on the grounds, only for any trace of it to vanish before anyone else can see it. A doctor concludes that she is suffering from hallucinations, but the chauffeur Robert becomes her one ally as she tries to work out what has really happened to her father.
