The Fabulous World of Jules Verne

An inventor, Professor Roche, has discovered an explosive of enormous destructive power. Count Artigas, a pirate leader, abducts him along with his assistant, Šimon Hart, and takes them to a hidden base inside a volcano in the Atlantic, intending to use the discovery to dominate the world. Working from a submarine, Artigas presents himself as a benefactor while pursuing his own plans, and Hart gradually learns the truth about their captor. A young woman named Jana, rescued from the sea, is also held at the base. The film is based on the Jules Verne novel "Face au Drapeau" and was released in 1958.

Karel Zeman directed the film, his second feature after Journey to the Beginning of Time, and wrote the screenplay with František Hrubín and Jiří Brdečka. Lubor Tokoš plays Hart, Jana Zatloukalová plays Jana, Arnošt Navrátil plays Professor Roche, and Miloslav Holub plays Count Artigas. Made in Czechoslovakia, the film runs 83 minutes.
