A wealthy businessman's daughter, Valerie Highsmith, has vanished while on holiday in Mexico, and every attempt to find her has come up empty. Valerie is known for her extraordinary bad luck, and a company psychologist suggests an unusual plan: send an employee who suffers from the same kind of chronic misfortune to look for her, hoping that one unlucky person might stumble onto the trail of another. The chosen man is Eugene Proctor, a mild accountant whose life is a series of small disasters. A private detective, Raymond Campanella, is assigned to travel with him and keep the search on course, though staying close to Eugene carries its own risks.
Nadia Tass directed the film, her first feature to follow the earlier work listed for her, and it was written by Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod. Martin Short plays Eugene and Danny Glover plays Campanella, with Harry Shearer, Sheila Kelley, Sam Wanamaker and Scott Wilson in supporting roles. Made for about 17 million dollars by Universal Pictures with Sean Daniel Company and Silver Lion Films, it took in roughly 25 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.8 from some 8,200 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 from about 145 votes. A critics' rating of 4.1 from 14 reviews places it below even that mixed audience showing.
