Sordid Lives

Sordid Lives follows three generations of a Texas family as they come together for a funeral. The death of the family matriarch brings relatives back to their small hometown, among them a grandson trying to find himself in West Hollywood, a son who has spent years performing as a female country singer, and two sisters with sharply different outlooks on life. Long-simmering resentments and secrets surface as the family prepares to bury one of their own.

Del Shores wrote and directed the film, adapting his own play. It sits early in his filmography as a writer-director, and several members of the cast, including Leslie Jordan, Beth Grant and Bonnie Bedelia, would return in later Shores projects. Olivia Newton-John appears as Bitsy Mae Harling, alongside Kirk Geiger and Beau Bridges.

The film had a limited theatrical run and grossed about 1 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.7/10 from roughly 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.5/10 from a much smaller pool of 52 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4/10 from 27 reviews places it well below the audience scores on IMDb. Its modest commercial performance and mixed critical standing reflect a release that found most of its audience beyond theaters.
