Juliet of the Spirits

Juliet of the Spirits centers on Giulietta Boldrini, a middle-aged Roman bourgeois housewife who senses that her husband Giorgio is drifting away from her. Her suspicions about his behaviour deepen, and she comes to believe he is involved with another woman. At a gathering at their home, a séance brings her into contact with spirits, and this experience, along with a visit to a mystic and an encounter with her free-spirited neighbour Suzy, pushes her to look more closely at herself and her unhappy past. What follows is a gradual inner journey in which Giulietta confronts her own repressions and the restrictive conventions of her upbringing.

Federico Fellini directed the film, his tenth of twenty features, made between 8½ and Spirits of the Dead. He wrote the screenplay with Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano, and Angelo Rizzoli produced. Giulietta Masina, the director's wife, plays Giulietta, with Sandra Milo, Mario Pisu, Valentina Cortese, Valeska Gert and José Luis de Vilallonga among the thirty credited cast members. The Italian and French production was released in October 1965 and runs 148 minutes.

The film blends comedy, drama and fantasy. Its ratings are consistent across audiences and critics: on IMDb and on TMDB it holds a solid score, with roughly 347 votes on TMDB, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3/10 from 29 reviews, indicating a generally favourable but not unanimous reception.
