Agnes and His Brothers follows three siblings whose lives have taken very different directions. Hans-Jörg works as a librarian but is consumed by sexual obsessions and voyeurism, and his dealings with women are troubled. Werner is a successful politician whose marriage and relationship with his son have broken down. Agnes, a transgender woman, performs as a dancer in the nightlife scene and struggles to settle into a conventional life. What the three share is a longing for happiness and a fraught bond with the eccentric father who shaped them.
Oskar Roehler directed and wrote the film, which sits between his 1999 debut Latin Lover and his 2024 film Bad Director. The cast is led by Martin Weiß, Moritz Bleibtreu and Herbert Knaup as the siblings, with Katja Riemann, Tom Schilling and Vadim Glowna in supporting roles, among 21 credited performers. Stefan Arndt produced for X Filme Creative Pool with ARD, ARTE and BR.
Released in Germany in October 2004, the film runs 115 minutes and is a comedy-drama. Its worldwide box office came to about 2 million USD, a modest return for a German production of its scale. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 36 votes, suggesting a limited but mixed response from viewers.
