The Door in the Floor

The Door in the Floor is a 2004 American drama directed by Tod Williams, who also wrote the screenplay. It centres on Ted Cole, a well-known author of children's books, and his wife Marion, whose marriage has been hollowed out by the death of their two teenage sons in a car accident. The couple stay together but live largely separate lives, and Ted fills his time with affairs and drink. One summer he hires a young man named Eddie O'Hare as his assistant, apparently for no clear reason, and Eddie bears a strong resemblance to one of the sons the family lost. Eddie falls for Marion, and their affair becomes the catalyst that pushes the household further apart. A young daughter, Ruth, remains in the middle of it all.

The film is adapted from John Irving's novel A Widow for One Year, of which it covers only the opening section. Jeff Bridges plays Ted, Kim Basinger plays Marion, and Jon Foster plays Eddie, with Mimi Rogers, Elle Fanning and Bijou Phillips in supporting roles. It was Williams's first feature, followed later by Paranormal Activity 2 and Cell.

Made for around 8 million dollars, the film took in roughly 7 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from about 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.1 from far fewer voters. A critics' score of 6.5 from 142 reviews places it close to the audience response.
