Gerry

Gerry is an adventure drama about two young men, both named Gerry, who leave the highway to walk through a stark, open landscape. Their plan is casual at first, but once they lose track of where they left the car, the trip turns into a struggle to find their way back. As they wander through desert and mountains, their early amusement gives way to exhaustion and growing irritation with each other, and their friendship is strained by the effort to survive.

The film was directed by Gus Van Sant from a screenplay he wrote with Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, who also star as the two Gerrys. It was released in 2002, after Finding Forrester in 2000 and before Elephant in 2003, as the seventh of the eighteen features he has directed in chronological order. Made for about four million dollars, it is a deliberately spare work with a small credited crew of forty-one.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around twenty-one thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 out of 10 from roughly three hundred and sixty-five votes. A film critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from ninety-nine reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores, suggesting that critics responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
