Short description

Reformed parolee Steve Lacey is caught in the middle when a wounded former cellmate seeks him out for shelter. The other two former cellmates then attempt to force him into doing a bank job.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When submitting the script for the film to André De Toth, Warner Bros. studio anticipated a more ambitious project with Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner in the lead roles and a shooting schedule of 35 days. However, according to De Toth, he decided that Sterling Hayden would be best suited for the role of the detective. Jack Warner allowed De Toth to use Hayden, but at the same time reduced the budget and the shooting schedule to 15 days.
  • At one point, Sterling Hayden’s character (1916-1986) explains that he gnaws on toothpicks because doctors forbade him from smoking. Hayden himself smoked a pack a day, but director André De Toth (1912-2002) did not allow him to smoke on set so that the actor would be even more irritable, as required by his character.
