Breast Men follows two doctors in Houston who develop the first silicone gel breast implants and the surgical procedure to place them. Kevin Saunders and William Larson struggle at first to find willing patients, until a newspaper advertisement brings women forward and the practice takes off. As the money and attention grow, the partners fall out and go their separate ways. Saunders builds a practice around ordinary women seeking the operation, while Larson's fortunes decline and his clientele narrows to strippers and actresses. The story spans the decades from the experimental work of the 1960s onward. The film is a comedy-drama made for television, produced by HBO and released in December 1997.
Lawrence O'Neil directed from a screenplay by John Stockwell, with Guy Riedel producing. David Schwimmer plays Saunders and Chris Cooper plays Larson, heading a credited cast of 105 that includes Emily Procter, Matt Frewer, Terry O'Quinn and Kathleen Wilhoite. Running 95 minutes, the film has a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 5,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.3 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 from six reviews places it slightly below what general viewers gave it, with all three figures pointing to a modestly received television production.
