The Stepfather
Short description
Michael Harding comes home after a year at military school to find his mother, Susan, engaged to a man named David who has already moved into the house. David presents himself as eager to build a happy family life, but as the two get to know each other, Michael grows convinced that his soon-to-be stepfather is not what he appears to be. Susan and those around her dismiss his warnings as the suspicions of a troubled teenager, so Michael starts looking into David's past on his own.
The film is a 2009 American horror thriller directed by Nelson McCormick, his third feature after Global Frequency and Prom Night, from a screenplay by J.S. Cardone. Dylan Walsh plays David Harris, with Sela Ward as Susan, Penn Badgley as Michael and Amber Heard as Kelly Porter; Sherry Stringfield and Paige Turco are also among the thirty credited cast members. Produced by Screen Gems, Maverick Films and Imprint Pictures, it cost about 20 million dollars and took roughly 31 million worldwide.
Audience scores sit in the middle: on IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around 42,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.8 out of 10 from fewer than a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 62 reviews is noticeably lower than both audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- The plot of the original film is based on the story of Richard List, who killed all his close relatives and went on the run. He was discovered only 18 years later, living under an assumed name. List was recognized by a neighbor who watched a television program about wanted criminals and called the police.
- The scene in the trailer where a chainsaw passes back and forth inches from the hero's face was filmed and used in numerous promotional materials, but was cut from the film during editing.
