Death Note: L Change the WorLd follows the detective L after the events of the Death Note case, with only a limited number of days left to live and without his longtime partner Watari at his side. A deadly virus, created by human hands, spreads from a Thai village and becomes a sought-after weapon on the black market. Because the virus mutates, the existing antidote no longer works. A young boy who survives infection is brought to Tokyo, where L takes on the task of protecting him and working toward a vaccine while facing eco-terrorists who want to use the virus on a global scale. The story is tied to the wider Death Note universe and introduces the character Near as a child.
The film is directed by Hideo Nakata, the seventh of the eighteen features he has directed in chronological order, coming between The Man who was Made a Fool by L the Most - Detective Matsuda's Case File (2007) and Chatroom (2010). Hirotoshi Kobayashi wrote the screenplay, and the producers were Nobuhiro Iizuka, Tadashi Tanaka and Takahiro Sato. Kenichi Matsuyama returns as L, with Narushi Fukuda as Near, Mayuko Fukuda as Maki, and supporting turns from Shingo Tsurumi, Youki Kudoh and Sei Hiraizumi among a credited cast of twenty-one. Released in Japan in February 2008, the film took about 30 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 9,200 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6 out of 10 from around 311 votes.
