Make Mine Music is a 1946 Disney animated anthology that follows the pattern set by Fantasia, offering a program of musical segments rather than a single continuous story. The film is presented as an evening at a performance venue, and its ten pieces range from lively jazz and popular song numbers to narrative ballads and a retelling of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, narrated by Sterling Holloway. Other segments include a baseball tale about Casey at the bat and the story of a whale determined to sing opera. The shorts are accompanied by singers and big bands of the era, with Dinah Shore, Benny Goodman, Andy Russell and Nelson Eddy among the voices and performers.
Hamilton Luske, Clyde Geronimi, Jack Kinney, Robert Cormack and Joshua Meador directed; Walt Disney produced. For Luske this was the sixth of fifteen films he directed, coming after Saludos Amigos and before Fun and Fancy Free, while Geronimi's seventh of fifteen followed The Three Caballeros and preceded Melody Time. Kinney's run of credits includes Pinocchio, Dumbo and Saludos Amigos before this film and several titles after it.
Made on a budget of about one million dollars, the film took roughly three million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.5/10 from twelve reviews, compared with a TMDB audience rating of 5.9/10 from 291 votes, a modest level of approval from a fairly small voting sample.
