John Rollins is a farmer in North Dakota struggling to keep his land and his family together. Crows ruin his corn, money is running out, and his marriage is strained. After finding a strange scarecrow hidden in his barn, he puts it up in the field despite his son's objections. His luck turns: the birds die, the crops recover and the debts ease. But the improvements come with a cost, as people around the farm begin to die and John comes to believe something supernatural has taken hold of his land, threatening his sanity and his household.
This horror film is a prequel to the earlier Messengers movie, going back to the farm to tell the story of John Rollins. It was directed by Martin Barnewitz from a screenplay by Todd Farmer, with Andrew Pfeffer producing. Norman Reedus plays John, Heather Stephens plays his wife Mary, Claire Holt plays Lindsey, Richard Riehle plays the neighbor Jude Weatherby, Darcy Fowers plays Miranda Weatherby and Matthew McNulty appears as Deputy Milton. It was made in Bulgaria and the United States and runs 94 minutes.
Released in 2009, the film had a modest worldwide box office of about 1 million USD. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.7/10 from around 5,500 votes, while on TMDB it has 5.5/10 from roughly 188 votes, indicating a small and largely negative audience response.
