Johnny Walker is a high school football star whose talent has made him the target of college recruiters from across the country. Short and scrawny but widely regarded as one of the best young prospects in the game, Johnny finds himself courted with cars, money and attention. He has promised his girlfriend Georgia that he will attend the local state college with her, but the offers arriving from major programs pull him in a different direction. As the recruitment battle intensifies and his family becomes entangled in it, Johnny has to work out what he actually wants.
Bud S. Smith directed the comedy from a screenplay by Steve Zacharias, Jeff Buhai and David Obst. Anthony Michael Hall plays Johnny, with Robert Downey Jr. as his friend Leo Wiggins, Uma Thurman as Georgia Elkans, Paul Gleason as Wayne Hisler, Steve James as Coach Ned Sanders and Jennifer Tilly as Connie Hisler. It was made by Orion Pictures on a budget of about 22 million dollars and took roughly 18 million at the worldwide box office.
On IMDb, the film holds a critics' rating of 3 out of 10 from 18 reviews, while audiences on TMDB give it 4.6 out of 10 from 160 votes. Both figures sit on the low side.
