Radio Flyer
Short description
Radio Flyer centers on two brothers, Mike and Bobby, who move with their mother to a new town after their parents separate. Their mother remarries, and the family's new life is shadowed by the stepfather's violence toward Bobby. Mike, determined to get his younger brother away from the abuse, sets out to turn the boys' red toy wagon into a flying machine.
Richard Donner directed the film, the tenth of the eighteen features he directed in chronological order, arriving between Lethal Weapon 3 and Two-Fisted Tales. David Mickey Evans wrote the screenplay, and Lauren Shuler Donner produced. Lorraine Bracco plays Mary, with John Heard, Adam Baldwin, and Ben Johnson among a credited cast of forty that includes Elijah Wood as Mike and Joseph Mazzello as Bobby.
The film was released in February 1992 and runs 114 minutes. Made for a budget of 35 million dollars, it returned about 5 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from roughly 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 from about 214 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 from forty reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The original script contained many fantastical scenes, for example, with a worm-man or zombies. However, they were removed by Richard Donner when he replaced screenwriter David M. Evans as director. Incidentally, the film's budget almost doubled after the change of director and exceeded 30 million dollars.
- On the movie theater stand, you can see a poster for the film X-15 (1961), also directed by Richard Donner.
- When Mike reads the postcard from Bobby, their last name – Wright – can be seen on it, just like the Wright brothers, pioneers of aviation.
- Joseph Marcello's younger brother John and Elijah Wood's younger sister Hanna appeared in episodic roles in the film.
