Carmen from Kawachi

Tsuyuko leaves her home in the Kawachi area of southern Osaka and drifts into the city, where she finds work as a bar hostess. There she meets Yoko, who runs a modelling school, and begins to consider a career as a model. Yoko offers her a place to live so she can take lessons while supporting herself at the same time. Memories of a difficult past follow her as she moves between jobs and relationships, including one with a man named Akira Sakata, and she takes work as a singer, a model and a kept woman.

Seijun Suzuki directed the film for Nikkatsu Corporation, working from a screenplay by Katsumi Miki and producing with Seijaku Sakaue. It was released in February 1966 and runs 89 minutes. It sits within a dense stretch of Suzuki's career: it is the twenty-third of twenty-six features he directed in chronological order, arriving between Fighting Elegy the same year and Branded to Kill in 1967.
