What's left behind the scenes

  • At approximately the 50th minute of the film, Ted Levine's character mentions a story by H.P. Lovecraft about a scientist who uses radio waves to detect the presence of beings from another dimension. This story is titled "From Beyond." It was written in 1920 and published in The Fantasy Fan magazine in 1934.
  • At the beginning of the film, US President Bill Clinton offers an official apology. This refers not to project MK ULTRA, but to another program—the Tuskegee study. This was an infamous medical experiment that took place from 1932 to 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama. The study was conducted under the auspices of the US Public Health Service to study all stages of syphilis. By 1947, penicillin had become the standard treatment for syphilis, but the subjects were not informed of this. Furthermore, the scientists ensured that the participants did not receive treatment at other medical facilities.
  • Christopher Nolan was initially attached to direct, but he left the project to work on the science fiction film Interstellar (2014).
