Halloween
Short description
Rob Zombie wrote and directed this 2007 horror film, a reimagining of John Carpenter's 1978 classic. It follows Michael Myers from childhood in Haddonfield, Illinois, where he commits a shocking act of violence within his own family, through years of confinement in a psychiatric facility under the care of Dr. Samuel Loomis. As an adult, Michael escapes and returns home in search of his younger sister, Laurie, leaving a trail of death behind him while Loomis races to intervene.
The cast includes Scout Taylor-Compton as Laurie Strode, Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Loomis, Tyler Mane as the adult Michael, Daeg Faerch as the ten-year-old Michael, Brad Dourif as Sheriff Lee Brackett and Sheri Moon Zombie as Deborah Myers. The film was produced by Rob Zombie with Andy Gould and Malek Akkad. It was Zombie's third feature as director, following House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, and it sits between those two films and his later work, including Halloween II.
Made for around 15 million dollars, the film took roughly 80 million worldwide, a strong return for a production of its size. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from about 138,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from roughly 2,600 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.4 from 122 reviews places it well below the audience scores, indicating a marked gap between professional and viewer responses to this version of the story.
What's left behind the scenes
- Dimension Films had a bold plan to turn this project into a crossover – a film featuring characters from different franchises, namely Michael Myers (the perennial villain from "Halloween") and the hero from "Hellraiser". Hoping to replicate the success of "Freddy vs. Jason" by New Line Cinema, Dimension conducted a corresponding poll on its website, and the project was ultimately rejected based on the results.
- Before Dimension Films decided to make a remake, they nearly greenlit a project called "Halloween: The Missing Years," which was intended to be a prequel to the original film and tell the story of Michael Myers's life in a psychiatric hospital.
- Filming for one of the most complex scenes in the film took place on Monday, February 22, 2007, on the campus of the University of Los Angeles. On that day, 160 people were involved in the filming crew, and approximately another 100 comprised the extras.
- Filming took place from January to March 22, 2007. Reshoots began on June 23-30, 2007.
- There are two versions of the ending and the escape from the psychiatric clinic.
- Oliver Stone was attached to the project for some time, but he declined to participate and decided to film "World Trade Center" instead.
- Production of this film was suspended due to the tragic death of Mustafa Akkad, the producer of all 8 previous "Halloween" films. He died as a result of injuries sustained in a terrorist attack in Jordan in November 2005.
- In one of the early scenes of the film, a television is shown playing "White Zombie" (1932). That was also the name of the band Rob played in.
