This drama follows the conflict between Antigone and Creon, the ruler of Thebes. When Creon forbids the burial of Polynices as a punishment for treason, Antigone refuses to let her brother's body remain exposed to animals. Despite the risks and the refusal of her sister Ismene to help, Antigone defies the law to honor her brother's memory, pitting personal loyalty against the demands of the state.
The film was co-directed by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, who also wrote the screenplay and served as producers. A joint production between France and Germany, the movie has a runtime of 100 minutes.
