Cutie Honey is a 2004 Japanese action film based on the manga character created by Go Nagai. By day, Honey Kisaragi is an ordinary office worker who is mocked by her colleagues; what they do not know is that she can transform into the superheroine Cutie Honey, thanks to an invention of her father known as the I-System. When a criminal syndicate called Panther Claw kidnaps her uncle, Honey sets out to rescue him. The gang, led by Sister Jill and organised around four "claws," has spread panic across Tokyo, and the police have been unable to stop it. Honey joins forces with the outwardly cold police officer Natsuko Aki and the journalist Seiji Hayami to take on the gang and save the city.
The film is directed by Hideaki Anno, and it is the seventh of the fifteen films he has directed, following Ritual and preceding Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) All Alone. Anno shares the screenplay with Rumi Takahashi. Eriko Sato plays Honey Kisaragi and Cutie Honey, with Mikako Ichikawa as Natsuko Aki, Jun Murakami as Seiji Hayami, and Mitsuhiro Oikawa, Hairi Katagiri and Sie Kohinata as members of Panther Claw. The credited cast numbers twenty-two.
Made on a budget of four million dollars by Nippon Television Network Corporation, Cine Bazar, Warner Bros. Japan and Bandai Visual, the film runs ninety-three minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 97 votes, indicating a modest but positive reception from those who have seen it.
