Ida

Set in Poland in 1962, Ida follows Anna, a young orphan raised by nuns in a convent who is preparing to take her vows. Before she can do so, her Mother Superior sends her to meet Wanda, the aunt she has never known and her only surviving relative. Wanda, a chain-smoking former prosecutor who once worked for the communist state, reveals that Anna's real name is Ida and that her family was Jewish and died during the German occupation. The two women then travel together through the winter countryside in search of the family's burial place and the truth about what happened to them, as Anna weighs the faith that sheltered her against the identity she has only now learned she has.

The film was directed by Paweł Pawlikowski from a screenplay he wrote with Rebecca Lenkiewicz, marking his move toward Polish subject matter after My Summer of Love and his third feature, before Cold War and Fatherland. Agata Trzebuchowska plays Anna and Agata Kulesza plays Wanda, with Dawid Ogrodnik, Jerzy Trela, Adam Szyszkowski and Halina Skoczyńska among a credited cast of 24. Shot in black and white, it was made for about 1 million USD and took roughly 11 million USD worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from 63,000 votes and on TMDB 7.2/10 from 1,095 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 8.4/10 from 167 reviews, notably higher than the audience scores. The film runs 82 minutes and was a co-production of the United Kingdom, Denmark, Poland and France. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
