Short description
A small alien craft lands on a New York City rooftop, and its unseen occupants begin preying on the people in the apartment below. That scene is the centre of the city's punk and new wave nightlife, where heroin, sex and performance art blur together. The aliens are hunting an opiate the human brain releases during orgasm, and their arrival turns the drug and club scene into a killing ground. At the middle of it is Margaret, a model and aspiring musician who shares the screen with the androgynous Jimmy, both played by Anne Carlisle, alongside Adrian, Owen, Sylvia, Katherine and Paul.
Slava Tsukerman directed the film as his first feature, and he wrote the screenplay with Nina V. Kerova and Anne Carlisle and produced it through Z Films Inc. It was released in the United States in August 1982 and runs 113 minutes, mixing comedy, drama, science fiction and thriller elements, with a credited cast of 34. Decades on it remains the earliest of the two features Tsukerman has directed, preceding Poor Liza, made in 2000.
Audience response is mixed rather than enthusiastic: on TMDB it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 145 votes. Critics have been considerably warmer, giving it 7.1 out of 10 across 28 reviews, so the film's standing rests more on its critical record than on broad viewer approval.
