The Call of Cthulhu

A man inherits a collection of papers from a professor relative, and as he reads through the notes on a cult devoted to a sea deity called Cthulhu, he is drawn into the same inquiry. Accounts left behind by researchers, a sailor who survived a disaster at sea and others who encountered the unknown feed into his growing understanding. The story unfolds in the 1920s, and its documents and testimonies form the material of the film.

The Call of Cthulhu is a 47-minute adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's story, made by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and directed by Andrew Leman from a screenplay by Sean Branney, who produced with Leman. It is presented as a silent film, using vintage techniques to imitate the look of cinema from the decade in which the source story is set, with music in a matching style. Matt Foyer plays the man at the centre, alongside John Bolen, Ralph Lucas, Chad Fifer, Susan Zucker and Kalafatic Poole among a credited cast of 50. The film has a rating of 7.1 on IMDb from around 9,600 votes and 7 on TMDB from about 180 votes. On Rotten Tomatoes it holds 7 out of 10 from six critics' reviews.
