Raw Deal centres on Mark Kaminsky, an FBI agent forced out of the Bureau after he uses excessive force on a suspect. He settles into a quieter life as sheriff of a small North Carolina town, until his former chief, Harry Shannon, comes to him with a proposition. Shannon's son was killed by organized crime, and he wants Kaminsky to infiltrate the mob outfit responsible. In exchange, Kaminsky is promised reinstatement to the FBI. He adopts a new identity and works his way inside the gang, operating without backup and without the knowledge of local police, while drawing close to a woman named Monique.
The film was directed by John Irvin, released in 1986 and running 106 minutes. It came between The Dogs of War, Ghost Story and Hamburger Hill in Irvin's filmography, and was written by Norman Wexler and Gary DeVore, with Dino and Martha De Laurentiis producing. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Kaminsky, heading a large credited cast that also includes Kathryn Harrold, Sam Wanamaker, Paul Shenar, Robert Davi and Ed Lauter. Made for about 9 million dollars, it took roughly 16 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.6 from 16 reviews, while on TMDB it averages 5.9 from 943 votes, a gap that suggests critics were harsher on the film than general viewers were.
