Short description
Solaris follows Dr. Chris Kelvin, a psychologist sent to a research station orbiting a strange planet after a distress call from an old friend, the mission commander. On arrival he learns that his friend is dead and that the remaining crew members are behaving erratically. Kelvin soon encounters a force tied to the planet that draws on his own memories, confronting him with his past in a form he cannot easily explain.
Steven Soderbergh directed and wrote the screenplay, working from Stanisław Lem's novel, and the film was produced by James Cameron, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini for 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment. It was Soderbergh's ninth film as director, coming between Ocean's Eleven and Full Frontal. George Clooney plays Kelvin, with Natascha McElhone as Rheya and Viola Davis, Jeremy Davies, Ulrich Tukur and Michael Ensign in supporting roles. The production involved 171 credited crew members.
Released in November 2002, the film runs 99 minutes and mixes drama, mystery and science fiction. Made for about 47 million dollars, it took roughly 30 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 89,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from about 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 208 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to George Clooney, Steven Soderbergh initially intended to cast another actor in the lead role. Clooney wrote him a letter requesting to be considered, deciding to appeal to the director in writing because he believed a written rejection would be less hurtful. Fortunately, the actor Soderbergh intended to cast turned down the role himself. That actor was Daniel Day-Lewis.
- In the film, the original names of the characters were changed to sound more convenient for the English-speaking audience: Snout became Snow, Hari became Rey, Sartorius became a black woman named Gordon, and Gibaryan’s name sounds like Jibarian.
- At the very beginning of filming, the film was conceived as a remake of Tarkovsky’s film of the same name.
- During the erotic scenes on set, only the actors involved – George Clooney and Natasha McElhone – and Steven Soderbergh with a handheld camera were present.
