L.A. Story

Harris K. Telemacher is a television weatherman in Los Angeles who presents his forecasts with comedic flair rather than scientific accuracy. His life unravels over a single weekend: he learns that his girlfriend has been unfaithful for years, and he loses his job after a prediction goes wrong. Guidance arrives from an unexpected source, an electronic freeway billboard that begins sending him messages and nudging him toward changes. Around the same time he meets Sara McDowel, an English journalist visiting the city, and the two form a connection that gives him a new way of seeing the place he lives in.

Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and stars as Harris, with Victoria Tennant as Sara, Richard E. Grant as Roland Mackey, Marilu Henner as Trudi, and Sarah Jessica Parker as SanDeE. Mick Jackson directed; the film followed his earlier Threads and Chattahoochee and preceded The Bodyguard, Clean Slate and Volcano in his filmography. It was produced by Daniel Melnick and Michael I. Rachmil and released in February 1991, running 95 minutes.
