Short description

The Sacrament follows a team of journalists who travel to document a friend's search for his sister. Patrick, a photographer, has learned that his sister Caroline joined a community after undergoing drug rehabilitation, and he has not heard from her since. He brings along two colleagues from a Vice Media-style outlet, Jake and Sam, who plan to film the reunion. The trail leads outside the United States to Eden Parish, a self-sufficient rural settlement of roughly two hundred people presided over by a charismatic figure his followers call Father. The visitors are welcomed and granted an interview, but the orderly surface of the community gives way to something far more dangerous, and the documentary trip turns into a struggle to get out.

Ti West directed and wrote the film, which sits seventh among the thirteen features he has directed, between The ABCs of Death and In a Valley of Violence. Eli Roth, Peter Phok and Molly Conners produced. The cast includes Joe Swanberg as Jake, AJ Bowen as Sam Turner, Kentucker Audley as Patrick Carter, Gene Jones as Father, Amy Seimetz as Caroline and Kate Forbes as Mindy, with 23 credited cast members and 49 credited crew. Made for about 4 million dollars, the film received moderate notices: on IMDb it holds a 5.8 out of 10 from 72 critics' reviews, while on TMDB audiences rate it 6 out of 10 across 512 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the real-life tragedy associated with the mass suicide of 913 people in "Jonestown," an ideological community of the "People's Temple" religious organization in Guyana in 1978.
  • The film was shot in chronological order.
  • A commentary on the film states that in the original version of the ending, the helicopter pilot did not die from a bullet. The helicopter successfully gained altitude, after which the pilot said: "One must obey the Father's commands" – and crashed the aircraft in a dive, resulting in the death of everyone upon impact with the ground.
  • All the cottages in the commune were built specifically for filming.
