Carmen

Francesco Rosi directed this 1984 film adaptation of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, which is itself based on Prosper Mérimée's novella. Set in early nineteenth-century Spain, the story centres on Carmen, a tobacco factory worker, and Don José, a soldier who becomes infatuated with her. His obsession leads him to abandon his military duties, but Carmen's affections shift toward the bullfighter Escamillo, setting the two men against each other. The film was shot on location in Andalusia, using the region's landscapes rather than studio sets. It was written by Rosi with Tonino Guerra and produced by Patrice Ledoux.

The cast is led by soprano Julia Migenes in the title role, with Plácido Domingo as Don José and Ruggero Raimondi as Escamillo. Faith Esham, Lillian Watson and Susan Daniel appear in supporting roles. Running 152 minutes, the film was released in March 1984 and was a co-production between Italy and France.

Carmen came late in Rosi's filmography, following The Swindlers, Salvatore Giuliano and More Than a Miracle. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.9/10 from eight reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.9/10 from 35 votes, indicating limited but generally favourable audience engagement.
