Short description
Adele August is a single mother with a taste for grand gestures and a habit of making poor decisions, especially where money is concerned. Her teenage daughter Ann is the opposite: a serious student with plans to attend an Ivy League university. When Adele uproots the two of them from their Midwestern town and moves to Beverly Hills to chase her dreams of Hollywood success, Ann is frustrated by her mother's impulsive behaviour and longs for a life of her own on the East Coast. The move sets mother and daughter at odds while the two of them learn to live with each other.
Wayne Wang directed the film, which came after The Joy Luck Club and Smoke in his filmography. Susan Sarandon plays Adele and Natalie Portman plays Ann, with Hart Bochner, Eileen Ryan, Ray Baker and John Diehl appearing in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Alvin Sargent and Mona Simpson, and Laurence Mark produced; the production involved 36 credited cast members and 104 credited crew.
Released in November 1999, the film runs 114 minutes and blends comedy, drama and romance. Made on a budget of about 23 million dollars, it earned roughly 24 million dollars worldwide, a modest result. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from around 19,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from over 300 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 88 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Before filming began, Susan Sarandon told the producers she would not appear in the film unless Natalie Portman played the role of her daughter.
- The film is based on the biographical book by a well-known American writer, Mona Simpson. Mona is Steve Jobs's biological sister, of whom he was unaware until the age of 27. The book, "Anywhere But Here," tells about Jobs's childhood and biological parents.
