High Spirits

High Spirits is a comedy-fantasy set in an old Irish castle whose owner, Peter Plunkett, is struggling financially and opens the estate to foreign tourists. To draw visitors, he advertises the castle as haunted, and he and his staff stage ghostly scares. The trouble is that the building really does have ghosts, and the arrival of a busload of American guests sets off a supernatural commotion in which the spirits take an interest in the visitors.

Neil Jordan directed from his own screenplay, with Stephen Woolley and David Saunders producing. It is the third of the fifteen films Jordan has directed, following Mona Lisa and preceding We're No Angels. Peter O'Toole plays Plunkett, alongside Daryl Hannah, Steve Guttenberg, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Tilly and Liam Neeson among a credited cast of twenty. The production had a budget of 15 million US dollars and took about 9 million worldwide, so it did not recoup its costs theatrically.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from sixteen reviews, lower than the audience score of 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB based on 252 votes.
