Short description
Desmond Doyle is devastated when his wife abandons their family on the day after Christmas. His unemployment, and the fact that there is no woman in the house to care for the children—Evelyn, Dermot and Maurice—make it clear to the authorities this is an untenable situation. The Catholic Church and the Irish courts decide to put the Doyle children into Church-run orphanages.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Several decades after the events depicted in the film, scandals caused by revelations of indecent acts by Catholic priests against children in Ireland in the 1950s (among other instances) gave the story told in the film an even darker resonance than the filmmakers intended.
  • The film states that Evelyn's mother ran away with a lover to Australia. In reality, she moved to England, where she eventually started another family. Evelyn Doyle subsequently met with her mother several times, but they never reconciled.
