Angélique
Short description
Set in 17th-century France, this romance adventure follows Angélique, a young woman forced into a marriage with the wealthy and older Count Joffrey de Peyrac. Although she is initially repulsed by his appearance, she eventually discovers his kindness and develops a deep love for him. Their happiness is threatened by King Louis XIV, who becomes envious of the couple's wealth and joy. The King has Peyrac imprisoned in the Bastille on charges of sorcery, forcing Angélique to fight against systemic oppression and injustice to save her husband. Her efforts are further complicated by a secret plot from her past involving the monarchy.
The film was directed by Ariel Zeitoun, following his work on Yamakasi and Masked Mobsters. The screenplay was written by Nadia Golon, Philippe Blasband, and Zeitoun. The cast features Nora Arnezeder in the title role, alongside Gérard Lanvin, Tomer Sisley, Simon Abkarian, Florence Coste, and David Kross. A co-production between Austria, Belgium, France, and the Czech Republic, the movie was produced by companies including EuropaCorp and France 3 Cinéma. Audience reception is moderate, with a rating of 6.1/10 from 2,000 votes on IMDb and a slightly higher score of 6.5/10 from 129 votes on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, Nora Arnezeder had to swim in the Seine and escape pursuers in corridors teeming with rats, even if they were trained, they were no less frightening.
- Although the text of the book belongs to Anne Golon, and Serge Golon worked on the historical context and materials, the appearance of his name on the book cover was a requirement of French publishers, who believed that no one would believe a woman could create such a novel alone. In France, "Angelique, Marquise of Angels" is considered a joint work by Anne and Serge Golon.
- It took eight weeks of training, four hours a day, to prepare the fencing scenes for Peirac.
- Mathieu Kassovitz, who played Nicolas, was not the first choice for the role. Initially, Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio was confirmed for the cast.
