Big Miracle
Short description
Big Miracle is set in a small Alaskan town in the late 1980s, where three gray whales become trapped beneath the ice during their migration, with only a single opening to surface for air. A local news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer, who share a personal history, work to draw attention to the animals' plight. Their efforts bring together Inuit residents, oil companies, and the American and Soviet governments, as rival nations set aside Cold War tensions to coordinate a rescue before the whales run out of time.
Ken Kwapis directed the film, which he made after He's Just Not That Into You and before A Walk in the Woods. The screenplay is by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, and the cast includes Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, Kristen Bell, Vinessa Shaw, Dermot Mulroney and Ted Danson, among 39 credited performers. It was produced by Universal Pictures with Working Title Films and others. Made for a budget of 40 million dollars, it took in about 25 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 534 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10, drawn from 103 reviews, places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Many scenes from the film were shot in Anchorage, Alaska, and its surroundings. Even some events that, according to the plot, take place in California were filmed in Anchorage, where houses were decorated with plants typical of southern California. Members of the Alaska National Guard were played by real military personnel.
- Jackie Purcell, the chief meteorologist for an Alaskan television channel where John Krasinski's character works, played one of the reporters in the film.
- The sports commentator shown in the archival footage at the end is Sarah Palin, long before she was elected Governor of Alaska and ran for Vice President of the United States.
- In the film, three gray whales are named after characters from the comedic cartoon series "The Flintstones" (1960). In reality, their names were Bonnet, Crossbic, and Bone.
