Short description

Bill Whitney lives with his parents and his sister in a wealthy Beverly Hills neighbourhood, where he attends an exclusive school, does well in class and dates one of the most popular girls. Despite this comfortable life, he feels out of place among his family and their upper-class circle, and begins to suspect that he does not really belong to them at all. His unease is not helped by strange rumours about his parents' parties, and when a friend brings him evidence of what goes on at those gatherings, Bill starts looking into the family secret himself.

Brian Yuzna directed this American comedy, horror and mystery film from a screenplay by Rick Fry and Woody Keith, with Keith Walley producing. It was the first feature Yuzna directed, made before Bride of Re-Animator in the same year and ahead of later work such as Return of the Living Dead III and the two Dentist films. The cast includes Billy Warlock as Bill, Connie Danese, Ben Slack, Evan Richards, Patrice Jennings and Tim Bartell.

Released in March 1990, the film runs 100 minutes and draws on a relatively small production. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.7 from 14 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from 662 votes, a noticeably warmer response from the larger general audience than from critics.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Before filming certain scenes, director Brian ইউজナ (Yuzna) hung a sign on the studio door that read, "Abandon all hope ye who enter here."
  • Before filming certain scenes, director Brian Yuzna would hang a sign on the door of the soundstage with the inscription 'Abandon all hope, ye who enter here'.
  • The scene where Billy sees Jenny's body in the shower was added because director Brian Yuzna felt it was necessary to demonstrate something shocking earlier in the film.
  • The scene in which Billy sees Jenny's body in the shower was added because director Brian Yuzna believed that something shocking needed to be shown at the beginning of the film.
  • The film flopped at the US box office, but was very successful in Europe. 'Europeans are able to appreciate the social ideas embedded in the film, while for Americans it's all just jokes...' says the film's director, Brian Yuzna.
  • According to Brian Yuzna, he was more interested in surrealism than logic when creating the film.
