Short description
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me serves as a prequel to the television series Twin Peaks, following FBI agents investigating the murder of Teresa Banks in the town of Deer Meadow, Washington. One agent vanishes during the inquiry, and Special Agent Dale Cooper comes to believe the killer will strike again. The film shifts to the town of Twin Peaks itself, where it traces the final days of Laura Palmer, a high school student leading a double life that draws her into drugs and dangerous company as she is pursued by malevolent forces.
David Lynch directed the film, his eighth feature in chronological order, following Wild at Heart and preceding Lost Highway. He wrote the screenplay with Robert Engels and Mark Frost. Sheryl Lee plays Laura Palmer, with Ray Wise as Leland Palmer, Mädchen Amick as Shelly Johnson, Dana Ashbrook as Bobby Briggs, Phoebe Augustine as Ronette Pulaski and David Bowie as Phillip Jeffries, among a credited cast of 68.
Released in 1992, the film ran 135 minutes and was made for around 10 million dollars. It earned roughly 4 million dollars worldwide, a modest return against its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from about 118,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 out of 10 from around 2,363 votes, placing it in similar territory to the critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 83 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Lara Flynn Boyle, who played Donna Hayward in the series, was unable to continue her character's storyline in the prequel because she was already committed to four other projects at the time.
- David Lynch struggled for a long time to decide whether or not subtitles were needed in key scenes of the film. The British distributors of the film made this decision for him, and as a result, subtitles are present in all versions of the film except the British one.
- Robert Engels later stated that the original script for the film was much longer than the version filmed by Lynch. According to him, the original script would have been enough for a sequel, but the director shot only five hours of footage. Moreover, many of the cut scenes featured characters from the original television series.
- Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) and Kyle MacLachlan (Agent Dale Cooper), key figures in the television series, refused to participate in the filming of the prequel. Lynch eventually managed to persuade the latter to take on a reduced role, and to compensate for the gaps, he introduced the character of Agent Chester Desmond. This move slightly disrupted the logical sequence between the events of the series, the film, and several books written about "Twin Peaks."
- David Lynch, who played Gordon Cole, named his character after one of the minor characters in the drama "Sunset Boulevard" (1950).
