Short description
Larry and Carol Lipton are a married couple living in a Manhattan apartment building. Their routine is interrupted when Lillian House, the wife of their neighbor Paul, dies suddenly of an apparent heart attack. Carol becomes convinced that Paul is not grieving as a widower should and suspects he may be responsible for his wife's death. Larry dismisses the idea, but Carol pursues her suspicions, eventually drawing both her husband and their friend Ted into looking into Paul's life.
Woody Allen directed the film, the twenty-first of the forty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, following Husbands and Wives and preceding Bullets Over Broadway. He wrote the screenplay with Marshall Brickman and plays Larry, while Diane Keaton plays Carol; the two had collaborated on several of Allen's earlier films. Jerry Adler appears as Paul, with Alan Alda as Ted, Anjelica Huston as Marcia Fox and Lynn Cohen as Lillian. Robert Greenhut produced.
The film was released in May 1993 and runs 104 minutes. Made for a budget of about 14 million dollars, it took in roughly 11 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.0 from 31 reviews, and on TMDB it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 1,210 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- A leading role was written specifically for Mia Farrow, but Diane Keaton got the part. Following this, Farrow decided to end her relationship with Woody Allen, and then, to Allen's dismay, showed up on the set on the first day of filming.
- Woody Allen had planned to make his earlier film 'Hannah and Her Sisters' (1986) a story about a mysterious murder, but he removed that plotline and used it in this film instead.
- Carol Lipton (Diane Keaton) says she hates wearing a tie with a skirt. The actress made this combination popular through her role in the film 'Annie Hall'.
- "Manhattan Murder Mystery" was actually originally a working title for the film during production (Woody Allen's films usually have more generic working titles in the spirit of "Woody Allen's Autumn Project"), but since he couldn't come up with another title, it was decided to keep it.
- Carol Lippton (Diane Keaton) claims to hate wearing a tie with a skirt. The actress popularized the combination by playing in the film 'Annie Hall' (1977).
- This is the only one of many collaborations between Woody Allen and Diane Keaton in which their characters have a child together.
- Woody Allen was partially inspired by "The Thin Man" (1934) when creating this film. Therefore, the main characters were written in the image of Nick and Nora Charles.
- Woody Allen had planned to make his earlier film "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986) a mystery murder story, but cut this subplot and used it in "Manhattan Murder Mystery" (1993).
- The man in Indiana who murdered six people and ate them is, obviously, a reference to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and the first New York Post article about him.
- In the scene where Diane Keaton's character sees her 'dead' neighbor passing by on a bus, the advertisement on the bus features the word VERTIGO. This is one of many references to 'Vertigo' that appear throughout the film.
- 'Murder on Manhattan' was the working title of the film, but since Woody Allen couldn't come up with another title, it was decided to keep it.
