Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, this adventure film follows young Jim Hawkins, whose life changes when a dying pirate leaves him a map showing where the treasure of the notorious Captain Flint is buried. He and his companions set sail aboard a ship bound for the island, but not everyone on board can be trusted to share the same goal once word of the map spreads. Among the crew is the one-legged cook Long John Silver, whose intentions toward both Jim and the treasure remain uncertain as the voyage turns into a test of loyalty and survival.
Released in 1972, the film runs 94 minutes and was made as a co-production involving Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France, with Towers of London Productions behind it. Orson Welles, who also worked on the screenplay alongside Hubert Frank and an adaptation of Stevenson's text, plays Long John Silver, while Kim Burfield appears as Jim Hawkins. Walter Slezak, Ángel del Pozo, Rik Battaglia and Lionel Stander round out the main cast. The picture sits between John Hough's Twins of Evil and The Legend of Hell House in his filmography, and it is also credited to Andrea Bianchi and Antonio Margheriti, each of whom placed it in their own run of features.
For a family adventure adapted from a well-known book, the response has been modest. On IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from around 1,700 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 5.9/10 from 41 votes, suggesting a small but consistent audience rather than broad acclaim.
