Marion is an intellectual in her fifties who has spent much of her life holding her feelings at a distance. She takes a rented apartment so she can work on a book without interruption, only to discover that sound carries from the neighbouring office of a psychotherapist. Through the wall she overhears a patient named Hope describing her despair, and the words set Marion to examining her own choices, her marriage and the way her detachment has shaped the people close to her.
Woody Allen directed and wrote this American drama, which was released in October 1988 and runs 84 minutes. It is the fifteenth of the forty-eight films he has directed, following Radio Days and preceding Crimes and Misdemeanors. Gena Rowlands leads a cast that includes Mia Farrow, Ian Holm, Blythe Danner, Gene Hackman and Betty Buckley, with Robert Greenhut producing for Orion Pictures.
Made for a budget of 10 million dollars, the film took about 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from roughly 297 votes, while a critics' score of 6.5 from 27 reviews places the two closer together than is often the case.
