Short description
Dennis, a photographer living in West Hollywood, is about to turn 28 and finds himself questioning the friendships that have come to stand in for family. His circle includes Benji, Howie, Patrick, Cole and Taylor, and the group gathers regularly at a restaurant run by Jack, who offers advice and a place of refuge. Their bonds are tested when tragedy strikes. The film follows these men through relationships, jealousy, career turns and new responsibilities, with friendship as the constant.
Greg Berlanti directed from his own screenplay; it was the first film he directed, followed later by Life As We Know It, Love, Simon and Fly Me to the Moon. Timothy Olyphant plays Dennis, alongside Zach Braff, Ben Weber, Dean Cain, Billy Porter and Matt McGrath among 29 credited cast members. It was produced by Joseph Middleton and Mickey Liddell for Banner Entertainment and Meanwhile Films.
Made for about 1 million dollars, the film took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return on a small production. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from about 8,600 votes, while TMDB shows 6.3/10 from a much smaller base of 101 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2/10 from 27 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a similar reception on both sides.
What's left behind the scenes
- Many of the actors in the film decided that their characters needed necklaces and brought their own chains from home.
- The hospital where Zach Braff's character was taken was abandoned, and the crew spent some time cleaning up the building for filming.
- Initially, Greg Berlanti did not want to become a director and only agreed when he was approached with the offer for the fourth or fifth time.
- The scene with Justin Theroux and Matt McGrath's characters on the balcony was not filmed immediately because cars were constantly passing by below, and the loud sound of their engines interfered with the filming.
- While filming the swing scene with Timothy Olyphant and Andrew Keigan, some teenage girls noticed them. They waited until the filming ended and asked Keigan for an autograph. Olyphant also offered his autograph to the young fans, but they didn't know who he was and declined.
- The film's director and screenwriter, Greg Berlanti, was involved in the creation of the series 'Dawson's Creek' (1998-2003). He showed the script of this movie to his favorite actor, Kerr Smith, who liked it so much that he agreed to play any supporting role at Berlanti's discretion.
