The Giver
Short description
The Giver is set in a future society where conflict, hunger and suffering have been eliminated, along with memory, history and strong feeling. Life runs on rules and routine, and people do not miss what they have never known. Jonas, a boy approaching adulthood, is singled out for an unusual role: he will receive the memories of the world as it once was, passed on by an older man who holds them on the community's behalf. What he learns about pain, pleasure and the past sets him against the order around him.
Phillip Noyce directed the film, the thirteenth of sixteen features he has made, following Salt and preceding Above Suspicion. Robert B. Weide and Michael Mitnick wrote the screenplay, and Jeff Bridges produced and plays the title role alongside Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes and Odeya Rush. It is based on Lois Lowry's novel.
Made for about 25 million dollars, the film took roughly 67 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 from around 130,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from a much smaller number of ratings, so audience responses are close across both. A critics' score of 5.3 from 167 reviews sits below those viewer figures.
