Dolphin Tale 2 continues the story of Winter, the bottlenose dolphin who lives at the Clearwater Marine Hospital and swims with a prosthetic tail. Several years after the events of the first film, Winter loses Panama, the older dolphin who had served as her surrogate mother. Because dolphins cannot legally be kept alone, the hospital faces a deadline: find Winter a new companion or see her moved to another facility. When a stranded young dolphin named Hope is brought in, the team hopes the two animals will accept each other, though Winter's reliance on her prosthetic tail raises doubts about how she will respond to a new arrival.
Charles Martin Smith directed and wrote the screenplay, returning to the story after directing the 2011 original; it stands fourth among the six features he had directed up to that point and was followed by A Dog's Way Home. Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff reprise their roles as Sawyer Nelson and Hazel Haskett, with Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson also returning, while Morgan Freeman again appears as Dr. Cameron McCarthy.
Released in September 2014, the film had a budget of 36 million US dollars and took about 58 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.4/10 from roughly 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9/10 from 377 votes; critics rated it 6/10 across 86 reviews, placing it close to the audience scores.
