Short description
Bliss Cavendar is a teenager in the small Texas town of Bodeen, where her mother keeps entering her in beauty pageants she has no interest in winning. When she and her friend Pash travel to nearby Austin, Bliss discovers roller derby, a fast and physical sport whose players adopt brash personas, and she is drawn to it immediately. She tries out for a team without telling her parents, taking on a new name on the track.
The film is Drew Barrymore's feature directing debut, from a screenplay by Shauna Cross, and Barrymore also appears in the cast as Smashley Simpson. Elliot Page plays Bliss, with Alia Shawkat as Pash, Marcia Gay Harden as her mother Brooke, Kristen Wiig as Maggie Mayhem and Landon Pigg as Oliver. It was made for about 15 million dollars and took in roughly 17 million worldwide.
The film holds a 7 out of 10 critics' rating across 188 reviews, slightly above its audience scores of 6.9 on IMDb from around 72,000 votes and 6.7 on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Ellen Page's character goes to the roller derby, she states she is 22 years old (instead of 17). In reality, this was the actress's age at the time of filming.
