Short description
Raizo was recruited as a child by the Ozunu Clan, a secret organization widely believed to be a myth. Trained to be a lethal killer, he eventually breaks away from the group after they execute a close companion. While seeking revenge, he encounters Mika, a Europol agent in Berlin who is investigating political murders linked to the same Asian society. After Mika becomes a target for the clan, she and Raizo are forced into a dangerous struggle for survival against the assassins.
Directed by James McTeigue, this film followed his work on V for Vendetta. The cast features Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune, Sho Kosugi, and Randall Duk Kim. Produced by Joel Silver, Grant Hill, and Lilly Wachowski, the production was a collaboration between companies from the United States, Germany, France, and Korea.
The movie had a budget of 40 million USD and earned 62 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception was moderately positive, with a rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb from 79,000 votes and 6.8/10 on TMDB from 1,881 votes. These scores are higher than the rating from film critics, which stands at 4.6/10 based on 116 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Colin Chow was supposed to play one of the roles in the film, but after considering the offer, he declined, stating that the proposed character did not suit him.
- Rain gained an additional 10 kg of muscle for the role, following a strict diet.
- On May 6, 2022, the Oktyabrsky District Court of St. Petersburg banned the film in Russia due to scenes of violence.
- The film's producers, the Wachowskis, were very dissatisfied with the original script and brought in J. Michael Straczynski to revise it six weeks before production began. The screenwriter, called in at the last minute, spent 53 hours on the entire process.
- The German Federal Film Fund provided approximately $9 million for the film's production, which was its largest subsidy in 2008. Another $1 million was received from a regional organization in the German state of Brandenburg.
