A young couple, Khalid and Salama, move from the United States to the United Arab Emirates after a personal tragedy, hoping a fresh start near family will help them recover. Khalid has taken a job there, and the two settle into a new luxury apartment tower called Al Hamra in Abu Dhabi. What they do not know is that the building stands on TMDB of an abandoned fishing village, also named Al Hamra, which local legend says was deserted after its residents were tormented by malevolent beings known as djinn. As Salama struggles with her grief and grows increasingly uneasy in the tower's eerie corridors, Khalid worries about her state of mind. The film leaves open whether something supernatural is at work or whether the couple is dealing only with psychological fallout.
Djinn is a 2013 Emirati horror film directed by Tobe Hooper, working from a screenplay by David Tully and produced by Tim Smythe and Daniela Tully. It was Hooper's fifteenth film as director, following Mortuary in 2005. The cast includes Khalid Laith as Khalid, Razane Jammal as Salama, Aiysha Hart, May Calamawy, Carol Abboud and Paul Luebke. The production was mounted by Imagenation Abu Dhabi FZ and FilmWorks, and the film runs 85 minutes.
Reception was weak. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.4 out of 10 from around 2,200 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 4.4 out of 10, from a much smaller base of roughly 68 votes. The two scores agree closely, indicating a consistently low opinion among those who have seen it.
