A young teacher named Marianne is travelling to a new post at a girls' school in Transylvania when she is left stranded and takes shelter at the castle of Baroness Meinster. There she meets the baroness's son, kept locked away by his mother, and agrees to help him free himself. Her act of sympathy has consequences she did not intend: the young baron is a vampire, and his release brings the undead down upon the surrounding countryside and the pupils of Marianne's school. Dr. Van Helsing, already travelling through the region, takes up the hunt for him.
The film was directed by Terence Fisher, the seventh of the sixteen features he directed, arriving between The Mummy and The Curse of the Werewolf. Jimmy Sangster, Peter Bryan and Edward Percy wrote the screenplay, and Anthony Hinds produced for Hammer Film Productions and Hotspur Film Productions Ltd. Peter Cushing plays Van Helsing, with Martita Hunt as Baroness Meinster, Yvonne Monlaur as Marianne, Freda Jackson as Greta, David Peel as Baron Meinster and Miles Malleson as Dr. Tobler; twenty-two performers are credited.
Released in June 1960 and running eighty-two minutes, the British horror film holds an IMDb rating of 6.6 from around ten thousand votes and a TMDB rating of 6.7 from 268 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from nineteen reviews places it slightly below the audience scores, though the three sets of figures sit in a similar range.
