The Heavenly Kid

The Heavenly Kid is a 1985 American comedy-fantasy about Bobby, a young man who dies in a car crash in the 1960s. Rather than gaining immediate entry to heaven, he is assigned to return to Earth as a guardian angel to earn his place. Sent down in the 1980s, he is charged with looking after Lenny, an awkward high school student, and sets about teaching the timid teenager how to be confident and cool. The arrangement grows into a genuine bond between the two, while Bobby finds the world he left behind considerably changed.

Cary Medoway directed the film, which he also co-wrote with Martin Copeland, and Mort Engelberg produced it. Lewis Smith plays Bobby, Jason Gedrick plays Lenny, and Richard Mulligan appears as Rafferty, with Jane Kaczmarek, Beau Dremann and Mark Metcalf among the cast. The production ran 90 minutes and was handled by Orion Pictures with Engelberg-Sumner-Cheikes.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 10 critics' reviews, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 out of 10 from 131 votes, a clear gap between critical and audience responses.
