C.H.U.D. is a 1984 horror and science fiction film set in New York City, where a series of strange murders and disappearances points toward something living beneath the streets. A police captain, a photojournalist, the photographer's girlfriend and a man known as The Reverend, who runs a shelter for homeless people, are drawn into the investigation. Their search leads them into the city's sewers, where mutant creatures are attacking those who venture below.
The film was directed by Douglas Cheek, with a screenplay by Parnell Hall, and it was produced by Andrew Bonime. The cast is led by John Heard as George Cooper, Daniel Stern as A.J. Shepherd, Christopher Curry as Captain Bosch and Kim Greist as Lauren Daniels, among a credited cast of 32.
Made on a budget of about one million dollars, C.H.U.D. took roughly three million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.6, from a much smaller pool of 324 votes, so the two audiences broadly agree. A critics' rating of 4.3 from 49 reviews places it below the audience scores. It runs 96 minutes.
